Best: Tribute To Louis Armstrong, 1972

In the ‘70s, the halftime shows at the Super Bowl were very different from what they are now. Despite this, they did have a few memorable moments as well. One such moment had to do with Louis Armstrong at the Super Bowl VI in 1972. Ella Fitzgerald and Al Hirt delivered a great jazz performance as a tribute to the trumpeter-singer. She frequently sang with him in the past. Together with the U.S. Marine Corps Drill Team and Carol Channing, Hirt and Fitzgerald sang “Mack the Knife.” Fitzgerald also made history as the first woman of African-American descent to perform at the halftime show!
