New Kids On The Block = No Kids On The Block?

We already talked about this earlier, but the 1991 Super Bowl was the first one to feature famous contemporary performers. Prior to that, the show instead featured local musicians and college bands. In 1991, however, these teen pop stars had been the headliner for the halftime show. Fans were eager to watch the performance from home, but they were very disappointed. The network ended up cutting the performance to deliver Gulf War coverage. Donnie Wahlberg, one of the band members, wrote about it for Playboy. In his piece, he said that “most people don’t know of or acknowledge it as the first of its kind — you know, the grandfather of all these halftime performances: because they didn’t see it.”
