M.I.A. had been performing beside Madonna when she gave the camera the middle finger. It might have been a small incident, but it backfired on her. People were not pleased with her behavior and called it a “finger malfunction” that outdid Madonna, who was disappointed to see it and said that M.I.A. showed “irrelevant” and “teenage” behavior. When she talked to Ryan Seacrest, she said, “I was really surprised. I didn’t know anything about it. I wasn’t happy about it. I understand it’s punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy and positivity; it seemed negative.”
