Best: U2, 2002
There was a reason this Super Bowl was different from the others that came before it. After all, 9/11 just happened five months prior to the event. U2 honored the loss of the country with “Where the Streets Have No Name.” As they sang the song, the backdrop showed the names of the victims of the attack. When Bono finished the song, he flipped his jacket open to show the stars and stripes on the lining. While it was a memorable show, it made others uncomfortable. “It was great theater and a touching tribute, but going from football to Beautiful Day to a heartbreaking, scrolling list of the thousands killed in a terrorist attack, then back to football in a span of 25 minutes was disorienting,” said Billboard.
