Carter’s Peace Deal
President Jimmy Carter mediated one of the most significant peace agreements in the history of the Middle East in 1978. Menachem Begin, the former president of Israel, and Anwar Sadat, the former president of Egypt, signed a peace agreement under extraordinary circumstances. Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula, which it had taken during the Yom Kippur War in 1973, and Egypt officially accepted Israel’s right to exist as a result of the agreement. The Nobel Peace Prize was granted to both political parties.
