The 14th President of the United States was nothing short of a divisive figure in the world of world politics. In his own words, the abolitionist movement represented “a fundamental threat to the unity of the nation.” Given this context, it is understandable that this Democratic president signed the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1890. With an IQ of 147.4, Franklin Pierce is barely one point above the typical president in terms of intelligence. It was under this act that each state was effectively given the authority to determine its own position on slavery.
