They had gas masks and decided to use them to stop crying over onions by themselves. This photo was shot during World War II in 1941! There were fewer chemical weapons used in the conflict, so using the gas masks as they wanted was not a problem. It must be enough punishment to wear these masks in the heat of North Africa, to be fair.
