Tom Cruise first met Mimi Rogers at a dinner party while he was filming Top Gun last 1985. Mimi was dating one of his friends, but the two of them ended updating. The two of them decided to get married on May 9, 1987. Their ceremony took place in upstate New York. The best man of Tom Cruise was Emilio Estevez. Mary Lee South, the mother of Tom Cruise, told the People magazine that her new daughter-in-law was “top-notch.” Mimi Rogers was previously married to Jim Rogers, a Scientology counselor. It was reported that this was the reason Tom Cruise turned on to religion. Wensley Clarkson, the author of Tom Cruise Unauthorized, told Entertainment Weekly last 2000 that “She took him under her wing.” However, the two of them soon announced that they were going to divorce in January 1990. Mimi Rogers said in an interview with Playboy last 1993, “Is that the story that I was bored with that child and threw him over chewed him up and spat him out? Well, here’s the real story. Tom was seriously thinking of becoming a monk. At least for that period, it looked as though marriage wouldn’t fit into his overall spiritual need. And he thought he had to be celibate to maintain the purity of his instrument. My instrument needed tuning.” And yet, there were still other rumors about why their marriage had ended. Some speculated that it was because he had already risen too far as an actor. Some said that it might be because of the age gap of six years between the two of them. Mimi responded to these rumors in her interview with U.K. Telegraph last 2001. “The stardom wasn’t a problem. What did annoy me, though, was the age thing. Some of the tabloids brought it up all the time and exaggerated the gap between Tom and me. Every six months, they seemed to add a year to my age. If Tom and I were still married, the tabloids would probably have me in my sixties by now.”
