Madonna and Sean Penn
Madonna rose to stardom because of her numerous hits like Borderline, Like a Virgin, and Material Girl. She also made an appearance in the film Desperately Seeking Susan and even in Speed-the-Plow, a David Mamet’s Broadway play. Sean Penn starred in multiple films like Colors, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and The Falcon and the Snowman. The two of them decided to get married in August 1985. The ceremony took place in Malibu, California, and it was an ocean-bluff ceremony. Photographers in helicopters buzzed it. Judge John Merrick was the one who performed their Marriage in August 1985. He said, “I felt they were serious about their vows. I remember a line from the ceremony: ‘Although there will be times that your moods may falter, and you’ll question each other’s motives, the faith and love that you share will help to show that your inconsistency is only for the moment.'” Madonna decided to file for divorce so that she could end her unstable Marriage with the actor Sean Penn. On January 5, 1989, Madonna filed for divorce and cited the reason as irreconcilable differences. Bob Merlis of Warner Brothers did not say when the two of them had filed the divorce, but he speculated that the divorce papers had been submitted in Los Angeles. The spokesman for Sean Penn, named John West, said, “It is true. Sean and Madonna are separated. They plan to divorce, and it’s amicable.” After the announcement about their divorce, there were some reports of a well-publicized fight that involved Sean Penn, and one of these included a 60-day prison term. The spokesperson of Madonna, Liz Rosenberg, said, “The Marriage is over. I can only tell you that there will be no further comment from either Mr Penn or Madonna on this subject.” Lois Smith, Sean Penn’s publicist, also said, “The two of them have called off the marriage.” As for the reasons for their separation, it was rumored that Sean Penn was violent to Madonna. Madonna filed assault charges against Seann Penn on December 28, 1988. However, she withdrew the assault charges against Sean. Madonna made a statement on December 17, 2015, related to the speculations where she said, “I am aware of the allegations that have surfaced over the years accusing Sean of incidents of physical assault and abuse against me, which purportedly resulted in Sean’s arrest for domestic assault and battery against me. Sean has never struck me, ‘tied me up,’ or physically assaulted me, and any report to the contrary is completely outrageous, malicious, reckless, and false.”
