Being Excommunicated
Bann is a significantly more harsh punishment than Meidung, which refers to being ostracized by the Amish. If your sin is serious enough to result in permanent ex-communication, you’ll be placed in the Bann and treated as an outsider. Depending on the severity of your ‘crime,’ you may be shunned for a long time. The idea is for the person to recognize their mistake and apologize.
