Fruit bats are among the coolest of the bats, yet they are underappreciated as a whole. To begin with, while some fruit bats are only a few inches long, others can have a five-foot wingspan! Because of their fox-like appearance… plus the fact that they can fly, these giants are frequently referred to as “flying foxes.” They also consume fruit, as you would have guessed from the name (not the common bat diet of bugs, or the fictional vampire bat diet of people). Furthermore, they have superb vision, proving that the phrase “blind as a bat” is a total fabrication.
