Jasper City is surrounded by a huge mass of American Chestnut trees. It gives the residents a source of income since they are commercially valuable. Chestnut trees typically grow and tower over everything in less time than oak trees. In the early 20th century, a fungal infection nearly wiped out all the American species. It was a good thing that this did not carry on, and they have since spread east to New Hampshire, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and even Nova Scotia. These trees have unique features, but this was the first time the loggers saw anything like this in their lives.
