Dixon said that the creature must have been a hunting dog. It was likely that he had been going after something in the tree. The dog was around four years old at the time of its death in 1960. He was most likely going after a squirrel or raccoon, making his way through a hole until it followed the rodent into the trunk. He probably failed to notice just how narrow the trunk was getting near the top like a dog. This is a neat explanation because we can now see how the dog managed to get that high up in the tree.
