Renée Zellweger and Kenny Chesney first met at NBC’s Concert of Hope tsunami aid telethon in January 2005. Renée planned to meet Chesney and pass a note to him during the event. However, even before she could make a move, their publicists had been talking, and the intentions of Renée were revealed. A friend of Renée was interviewed by the People magazine and said, “When the broadcast wrapped, [Chesney] went over [to Zellweger] and said, ‘I hear you are trying to pass me a note — don’t let the principal find out.” They managed to keep their relationship a secret for months. The truth was only found when Renée handed Kenny a margarita and a kiss during Kenny’s concert. They got married just over a week later in the Virgin Islands. There was a time when Renée gushed about how cute her husband was and how excited she was to meet his great family. However, Renée filed for marriage annulment four months after they had gotten married, where she cited fraud as the reason. Once everyone found out what factor she had included, the public began to assume that Kenny was gay. Renée released a statement that said, “I would personally be very grateful for your support in refraining from drawing derogatory, hurtful, sensationalized or untrue conclusions and greatly appreciate your understanding that we hope to experience this transition as privately as possible.” Kenny made a follow-up statement and said, “This is an incredibly sad time. I just hope everyone can respect the privacy that I know Renée has already asked for.” After both of them had released their respective statements, they both released a third one, which stated, “the miscommunication of the objective of their marriage at the start is the only reason for this annulment. Renée and Kenny value and respect each other and are saddened that their different objectives prevent the success of this Marriage.”
