In the Amish society, any important life event necessitates careful deliberation and involves the entire community. It is impossible for people to get engaged and married without the consent of others. It doesn’t take long for a couple to get engaged after they start dating. When the man proposes, he and his girlfriend must ask the church for permission. They are allowed to marry when the church has blessed them.
