Even though he knew exactly what he needed to do, he was still nervous. His father was ready with the rifle, but things could go horribly wrong. He might be dead before his father could shoot if the wolf dove for him. When the wolf is free of the trap, it has two options: attack or flee. They had no idea what was going to happen and no way of predicting it. They were ready for anything that could happen. John knew he had to keep moving forward with the rescue.
