Prior to beginning his political career, he was a decorated military hero, and his ability to lead in the field earned him the nickname “General.” While serving in the Mexican-American War, he was hailed for his valor, and he was the last Whig Party member to be elected president. He began his service in March 1849 and devoted a significant amount of time and attention to the issue of slavery.
