We are all familiar with the adage that goes, “Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it.” Angie and Gino are a married couple from South California who made a wish that came true… and then some. Before everything happened, they had a healthy life with their two little boys. Even though they were content, it felt like there was something missing in their lives: a daughter. Their dream eventually became a reality, but let us just say that this was not what they signed up for!
Angie And Gino Always Wanted To Have Kids
There are people who are naturals at parenthood, and this couple happens to be one of them. When Gino and Angie got married, they could not wait to start a family. From the very beginning, they wanted kids and could not wait to expand the family further. Soon enough, they welcomed their first child into the world. Not long after that, they got pregnant once more. The family welcomed a new addition into the family in the form of yet another baby boy.
They Already Had Two Little Boys
Angie and Gino had always taken great pride in their parenthood. They adored seeing their little boys grow up and achieve milestones with every passing day. These parents thought that it was amazing to watch the boys turn into smart and kind individuals. Even if this was the case, they could not help but feel like there was something missing in their lives.
The Couple Wanted A Baby Girl As Well
Gino and Angie were the parents of two healthy boys. Even though they had a great life in Southern California, the family felt like it still needed something else. The couple might have been thankful for their little family, but it would be even better if they had a little girl as well. Day after day, the couple prayed for a little girl until Angie used a pregnancy test. It revealed some amazing news for the whole family!
They Eventually Got Their Wish
Angie felt excited to find that she was expecting. The parents could not wait to see if they were getting a boy or a girl this time. Even though they would have been fine either way, they were still holding onto the hope that it would be a girl. When it was time for them to check the sex of the baby, they received great news. The nurse turned to them and revealed, “It’s a girl!” However, this was not the entire story just yet….
Not Just One But Three
They were thrilled when they found out that they were expecting a little girl. However, they noticed that the doctor looked excited and then shocked when he checked the ultrasound. It turned out that Angie was not only having one girl but three of them! Yes, it means that they had triplets on the way. The couple was shocked to see the ultrasound. At long last, their biggest dream was about to come true. However, Angie then received some terrible news about the triplets.
Three Babies But Only Two Placentas
Of course, there was no way for anyone to expect a miracle like this one. They wanted a baby girl, but they were getting three! However, the truth was that it was even more unusual. When the doctor did the ultrasound, he saw that Angie carried two placentas. Two of the babies shared a single placenta and split from an egg. This meant that they were identical. On the other hand, the third one formed from a completely different egg. Truly, the situation was a rare occurrence!
This Was A Special Pregnancy
Angie and Gino did not ever expect that their prayers were going to be answered thrice. It got even stranger when they learned that two of the three girls were identical. The couple conceived naturally, so this made it even rarer. As a matter of fact, there was only 1 in 4,000 chances that a person would have triplets. Just so you know, it is a lot rarer to have two identical kids when they are triplets.
They Prepared As Much As They Could
Even though the couple felt thrilled about this new development in the family, they had to come to terms with it as well. It was obvious that their lives were going to change in a drastic manner. They got to work right away and prepared for the arrival of the girls by buying a minivan, getting a nanny, and asking for support from their friends and family. They were both working parents, so they also requested professional flexibility from their employers. We are glad to hear that they had been thinking ahead!
A High-Risk Pregnancy
Since they were expecting triplets, the pregnancy was a high-risk one. When she was in the early stages of the pregnancy, Dr. Daneshmand told them that it was going to be very different from what she went through during the delivery of her sons. Even though the idea of complications had occurred to Angie and Gino, they remained unprepared for what was going to happen. All of a sudden, the risk of delivering triplets got way too real for them.
Angie had serious complications around 26 weeks into her pregnancy with the triplets. All of a sudden, there was a fluid discrepancy that created a potentially dangerous situation not only for her but also for the unborn babies. When she was interviewed by Sharp Healthcare, she narrated, “We saw that the liquid for ‘Baby B’ was too low and for ‘C’ was a little high.” When a baby is in the womb, they needed to have the right levels of liquid. They had to do something about it as soon as possible. Angie had to do something extreme to ensure both her safety and that of the babies.
She Was Taken To The Hospital
The fluid levels were posing a huge risk for two of the triplets. If the fluid is too high or too low, the girls would be at the risk of being born with underdeveloped lungs and brain hemorrhaging. It meant that she could not go about with her daily routine either. In order to ensure the safety of the triplets and herself, her doctor told her to check in at the hospital and remain there for the rest of the pregnancy.
Hitting Pause On Her Life
This came as a shock to her. “I said, ‘Wait, right now?'” she told Sharp Healthcare. It was a crossroads of sorts for her. Clearly, she wanted to do everything in her power to ensure that the babies would be all right. However, she was probably going to have to stay in the hospital for weeks since she was only 26 weeks into the pregnancy. She also had two boys at home, so it would be hard to not always see them.
They Made It Work
Angie had a difficult time moving into the hospital at only 26 weeks. She had to remain in bed rest without being in the comfort of her home. On top of that, she would be away from her husband and the boys. However, she knew that it was important to look after the triplets at the same time. In the end, they were able to make it work. Gino and their sons would visit her at the hospital every single day. Even though they had to spend time together at the hospital, they were just glad to all be together.
The Hospital Became Her Home
With Angie spending time in the hospital, the concept of home changed for her. It might have been a temporary situation, but the hospital was now her home. She and Gino worked hard to make things as homey as possible. The nurses sympathized with this situation, which is something that many moms go through. A nurse called Toni Hicks talked to Sharp Healthcare and said, “They’re taken away from everything that’s normal.” She went on, “So by telling them, ‘You know, I understand that this is really hard for you’ — that’s huge for our patients.”
Their Date Night
We want you to put yourself in her shoes for a second. Angie was already going through a high-risk pregnancy and then had to leave her home to check into the hospital for a few weeks. On top of this, she did not have the company of her family with the exception of a few hours a week during visitation hours. While this was the reality for the couple, Gino and Angie tried their best to keep her morale up. They needed to get a little creative for this. Among other things, they had “date night” at the hospital! They would eat dinner in her hospital room. She said, “This is our date night that we never get at home.”
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
When there are triplets on the way, it is important to draw up a birth plan for their arrival. Even though the medical team worked hard to see the pregnancy through, they were aware that the babies might have to stay in the NICU or neonatal intensive care unit because of their tiny size. Before her due date, Angie and Gino visited the unit at the hospital. This was going to ensure that they would be prepared for anything that might happen.
There is no expectant mom who wants her children to end up in the NICU. Despite this, Angie stayed positive during the tour and even beyond that. She actually felt in control of the pregnancy after making a detailed birth plan and touring the NICU. “You hear a lot of stories, you know, of triplets who don’t make it or especially of identical twins. The body absorbs one of them,” she explained. “I didn’t see [the NICU] as a sad place, I saw it as a place that was empowering for me.”
Baby B Was Not Doing As Well
Over the course of the pregnancy, Angie and the medical team made sure to check on the babies on a daily basis. As they were doing another ultrasound, they found out that baby ‘B’ was tinier than her sisters. Even though this was not unusual because she shared a placenta with baby ‘C,’ the team had to monitor this. By then, Angie was already over halfway through the pregnancy. However, the babies were going to be premature if she gave birth to them at that point.
Only 34 Weeks
During her confinement at the hospital, Angie and the medical team had a goal. They just wanted her to reach 34 weeks. If she could reach this period of her pregnancy, it would mean that the triplets would get enough time to develop in utero. Any less than that span of time, there was going to be a higher chance of complications since they would be born underdeveloped. Angie only had to make it until then.
One Day At A Time
When Angie was over 30 weeks into the pregnancy, there was nothing for her to do but to take it one day at a time. Even though she and Gino could not wait to meet the triplets, they knew that their daughters still needed time to develop. Anything seemed possible at that point in time. “Anything could happen between now and my due date,” she explained when she spoke to Sharp Healthcare. “We could have contractions that can’t control. We may do an emergency C-section. For us, we don’t count the weeks here, we count the days.” At any rate, the little girls were going to arrive at any moment now!
The Big Day
Even though Angie and the medical team hoped that they would get to 34 weeks, it seemed like life had different plans. At only 32 weeks and a day pregnant, she went into labor! It was time for them to don their game faces and prepare for what was to come. “Three little stars will be born tonight,” said Gino. “I have some hard work ahead of me now,” Angie said when she was wheeled into the delivery room.
Soon, she was dilated and ready to bring the girls into the world. Thanks to various safety concerns, the medical team knew that the best option would be a C-section. This was the safest bet for both Angie and the girls. The team prepared the room and started the operation. One after the other, the three little girls were delivered into the world! The medical team took care of the triplets, who each weighed below four pounds. They were named Anabella, Camilla, and Daniella.
Advanced Life Support Team
The medical team knew that Angie might go into labor earlier than planned, so they were ready. The girls were all so small, so they had to be put on advanced life support. This would help ensure that they would be healthy during this point in their lives. After the delivery of each baby girl, she was handed over through a window to the room beside the operating room. They were then checked, stabilized, and given help with breathing. When this was over, they were taken to the neonatal intensive care unit.
They Had Yet To Meet
After carrying a baby for months on end and experiencing the pains of labor, there is nothing more that a mom wants to do than to hold the baby. Even though Angie had a birth plan, she found it hard not to see the newborn girls as soon as they arrived. The girls had been very tiny, so it was imperative that they were taken to the NICU as soon as possible. Angie felt sad that she did not get to hold them but felt comforted by the fact that they were getting the best care out there.
Camilla, Anabella, and Daniella each weighed below four pounds when they were born. They were so tiny that their lungs were not yet fully developed. This was the reason they had difficulty breathing. It was a good thing that the medical team knew what to do about it. They worked right away to ensure that they would receive enough oxygen through C-pap. It was clear that the triplets were in good hands. Despite this, it was still hard for Gino and Angie to simply watch from the sidelines.
Stabilizing The Babies
There was a time when the oxygen levels of the babies dipped to 55 percent. Luckily, the medical team was also ready for this. Pressure was needed to open up the lungs, which was why they were put on C-pap. Angie was finally able to see the triplets for the first time, although she had to do it on a digital camera. This was not as good as holding them, but she was still glad. Hopefully, Angie and Gino could meet their daughters soon.
The Nurses Took Care Of Them
Anabella, Camilla, and Daniella were now in the NICU. The nurses made sure to keep an eye on them all the time. The girls were all still very small, which made them vulnerable to all sorts of complications. One of the RNs who took care of the girls is called Alina Harper. “You know, I really empathize with the parents that have to have their babies and be separated from them,” she said. Even though it was hard for Angie to be away from the girls, she knew that this was not going to last forever.
Only a couple of hours after the birth of Anabella, Camilla, and Daniella, they were already doing a lot better. Even though they had to stay in the NICU to prevent complications, the triplets were in stable condition and could breathe on their own. While they were not ready to go home yet, it was finally possible for them to meet their parents! Get ready because the heartfelt reaction of their mother is going to make your heart melt. You might even tear up!
It Was Sinking In
The following day was a whirlwind for Gino and Angie. After spending weeks on end in the hospital, their triplets have now arrived. However, it had yet to feel real because the girls were still in the NICU. The parents had not even held them yet! The medical team made sure to keep them posted on the status of the babies. This made everything feel finally real to this couple. And soon enough, the excited parents could meet Anabella, Camilla, and Daniella at long last.
The NICU Nurses Were Excited
The nurses had to deal with this kind of sentimental stuff every single day. When you watch parents during such a vulnerable moment, it is hard not to form a bond with both them and the babies. It was even truer for the medical staff members who took care of the three girls in the NICU. They could not wait for the triplets to be reunited with their parents! “I love to see the initial contact between mommy and baby,” said Alina Harper. “I always look for that, that moment that is just theirs that I get to be a part of.”
Time To Meet
Even though there was still a long way to go before Angie could recover from the C-section, she felt fine. Now that she and her daughters were all in stable condition, they could now be reunited. Angie was wheeled into the NICU to meet them. Gino was there by her side. The couple could hardly contain the excitement that they felt. It was time for them to finally meet the girls they had hoped so hard for!
Meeting Their Daughters
At last, Angie and Gino were brought into the room. The nurse took Angie to the individual stations of the girls. It felt like she and Gino had been waiting a lifetime to meet their little angels. When the nurse handed one of the girls to Angie, this mother could not believe it. She was overwhelmed by her emotions and even started to cry! She then turned to Gino and told him, “It feels so right.”
It might have only been a couple of hours, but it seemed like much longer than that for Angie. “I was only a few hours apart from them and I already missed them,” she said, “So it feels good to be reunited.” The nurses picked up the babies one by one so that Angie could hold all of them individually. She loved hearing them cry as she cradled them in her arms and soothed her little girls.
Dad And Daughter
Angie was not the only person in the room who felt anxious about meeting the girls. Of course, Gino was as well. He also took turns cradling Anabella, Camilla, and Daniella. The nurses tucked each of them into his shirt to allow skin-to-skin contact. This was because skin-to-skin contact can have benefits for premature children. When this happens, the body acts as a natural incubator of sorts and regulates the temperature needs of the infants.
A Beautiful Moment
Usually, newborn kids do not open their eyes as soon as they are born. However, Anabella opened her eyes and looked up at her dad as she was on his chest! When he spoke, her eyes stayed on his mouth as if she was listening to what her father had to say. “Look at that, she’s opening her eyes, listening to me,” he said. “Beautiful, beautiful feeling.” Let us now see how they are doing these days! How are they?
After a couple of weeks in the NICU, the girls were all stable enough to go home. Let us not forget that Angie had spent weeks in the hospital and then a couple more when the girls were in the NICU. It was finally time for all of them to go home. It felt like the family was complete at last. As the triplets grew up, they thrived and developed personalities of their own. Before their parents knew it, they were turning 6.
Turning Six Years Old
It felt like it was only yesterday that they were cradling the triplets in the NICU. The years flew by, and it was now time for them to celebrate the sixth birthday of the girls. As you can imagine, so many things have changed since 2010, before they arrived. Even though Angie had to spend a lot of time on bed rest, the first few years of the triplets’ lives felt like it went by in the blink of an eye.
Their Hands Are Full
It is not easy at all to be a parent. Trust us, it was hard for them to raise five kids together, especially when the three girls were triplets. Even so, Angie and Gino worked hard to do their best. They were so committed to their family and did everything they could to ensure that the children would be happy and healthy. Even though they made it look so easy, you can bet that it is much harder than it looks.
A Family Of Seven
Only seven years ago, Gino and Angie prayed that they could finally get a daughter. In no time, their prayers were heard… and then some. Even though they did not get a family of five as they expected, they are having a blast as part of a family of seven. The five kids are all close in age, so the couple has their hands full. Despite this, Gino and Angie would not have had it any other way. They actually enjoy the “fun chaos” that is their household!
Wishes Do Come True
Gino and Angie are raising the three girls with their two boys. It is very difficult for the couple to imagine a life without their children. Even though they have their hands full, they were grateful to live this life. They got a lot more than they bargained for when they prayed for a daughter, but this all worked out for the best. “It’s truly a dream come true to have them come into my life,” Angie explained. What a touching story! Now, let us see the journey of another mom who beat all the odds by having her own set of miracle triplets.
Time To Expand The Family
Together with their daughter Indiana, Becki-Jo Allen and Liam Tierney lived in Liverpool, England. They were thrilled to expand the family some more, so everyone was glad when Becki-Jo announced that there was a bun in the oven when she was 23 years old. However, she soon felt off. She had nausea and extreme headaches that were much stronger than what she went through with Indiana. The couple went to a doctor for a checkup and anxiously waited for the result of the ultrasound. There was no way they could have predicted what life had in store for them!
There Were Three Babies
Becki-Jo was not only carrying one kid, but three! The couple felt both relieved and stunned to hear this. “It was the biggest shock of my life!” she shared in an interview. “We haven’t got any triplets in the family, so it came completely out of the blue.” Mind you, there is only one in 9,000 chances that a pregnant woman will have triplets. The odds went down if the mother is young and not on fertility assistance, so it was even stranger for Becki-Jo. Yes, the triplets had been conceived despite the odds! However, the couple felt more fearful when they were told an important thing about the pregnancy.
A Birth Scare
Even though the pregnancy got easier for a short period of time, things changed at week 31. This was when Becki-Jo started to get contractions. The babies were all in good condition, but they were small and unprepared for birth. It was only a little more than seven months, but most pregnancies last 38 weeks. Liam rushed her over to the hospital. Over there, the doctors tried to save the babies by doing a C-section. However, this was not yet the end of the battle for this family.
In Intensive Care
It is a relief to hear that the triplets all survived the C-section. Rocco, Rohan, and Roman could not stay with their mother since they had to be taken to intensive care right away. The boys all weighed below the normal weight, which is about five pounds. Among the triplets, Rohan weighed three pounds and ten ounces and was the heaviest child. Roman was three pounds and six ounces, while Rocco was three pounds and five ounces. Could the boys overcome all the risk factors in their way?
Early after birth, twins and triplets face more health risks than single babies. They often have congenital disabilities and birth complications that could affect their quality of life. The triplets stayed at the NICU for six weeks as doctors kept an eye on their heart rate, temperature, blood pressure, and respiratory rate. Premature babies often needed extra help as their bodies completed the development that they did not get in the womb. Liam and Becki-Jo dropped by the intensive care unit to visit the triplets but monitors and wires obscured their faces. It turned out that this journey was not over just yet…
After The Long Wait
It was a good thing that there were no complications for the triplets. Rocco, Rohan, and Roman all went home after spending six weeks in the NICU. Liam and Beck-Jo got busy setting up their room and buying baby products that they needed for the triplets. They had been under the impression that there were no more surprises waiting for them. It felt like this was a one-time ordeal, especially now that the triplets were all healthy and safe. However, what made things even stranger was the reaction of all the strangers who saw the little boys! What was it that caught their attention?
Something Felt Off
Whenever the couple went out with the boys, people on the street would stop them and point out just how much they looked alike. Beck-Jo took swabs from the inside of their cheeks and shipped the samples to a lab. Could two of them be identical, or were they all fraternal? It is not rare for triplets to look alike. For the most part, triplets are generally fraternal and stemmed from different eggs. There are times when one egg out of two will split into two, so a pair might look even more similar. Liam and Becki-Jo had a hard time distinguishing between Rocco, Roman, and Rohan. Why was it so difficult to tell them apart?
They Were Identical Triplets
It turned out that the three boys came from a single egg! The single egg then split into three different ones, so they are identical. The doctors initially told her that the boys were not monozygotic, but this turned out to be false. As a matter of fact, the doctors were also shocked by this and needed to check once more. Multiple sources say that there is only one in 60,000 to one in 200 million chances that this was going to happen. It was pretty much impossible to have identical triplets, but here they were. The genetic phenomenon shocked a lot of doctors because of its statistical improbability.
Beating The Odds
It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Multiple births are already rare enough on their own since they only occur once in 67 times. On top of that, most of them are dizygotic, which means that the babies came from two different eggs. In this case, an egg split into two eggs before one of them split once more. There is only one in 250 chances that an egg will separate into two, but this happened twice in Becki-Jo’s womb! This was a very rare birth. In fact, most people will never see anything like this again.
Identical In Most Ways
Identical triplets bear the exact same DNA. This means that Rocco, Roman, and Rohan all have the same hair color, eye color, and blood type. It is interesting to hear that there are certain traits that re going to stay different. For one thing, they are going to have different fingerprints and teeth marks. According to science, their different personalities are going to help them grow up with lives and talents of their own. The environment is going to have different effects on them, but there is a good chance that they would have similar IQs and personalities. We can’t help but wonder how their parents can tell who was who!
How To Tell The Boys Apart
Even though they all look identical, Liam and Becki-Jo eventually figured out how to tell them apart. “They’ve all got dark birthmarks between their eyebrows, but Roman’s is slightly darker than the others, and Rohan has got a birthmark on his leg as well,” Becki-Jo explained. She also added, “But they all have completely different personalities.” Their parents said that Rohan tends to shout, Roman does not like sharing his toys, and Rocco simply goes with the flow. If you ask us, this is an easier way to tell them apart. However, it is not exactly a walk in the park to raise the boys. What was it like for their mom?
It Was Challenging
Becki-Jo took to Instagram to talk about how difficult it was to raise identical triplets. She had never gone through anything like this before. It was a good thing that the boys did not have any major health problems ever since they came out of intensive care. However, there were still plenty of challenges that the family had to face. As the mom of four kids, she finds it hard to go about her errands. Many people stopped her to talk about the triplets and expressed shock upon finding out that they were all identical.
A Single Mom
Before Becki-Jo gave birth to Indiana, she wanted to undergo neo-natal nurse training. As you can imagine, her passion only grew when she had the triplets who had to stay in the NICU for six weeks. If she did the training, it was possible that she would be assigned there. Liam does not live with her and spends his time helping Laura, his sister, but he does visit the family and offer support as much as he can. Yes, this means that Becki-Jo pretty much raises the four children on her own as a single mom! She truly is one incredible woman.
Triplets Cost A Lot
Aside from raising her daughter, Becki-Jo also has to deal with looking after three babies all at the same time. The triplets would go through 130 diapers and five packs of wet wipes each week! This means that they finish 520 diapers and 20 wet wipe packs per month. Aside from that, they go through four packs of baby formula and do the laundry thrice a day. We are glad to hear that Becki-Jo still gets to enjoy some downtime even with all the kids in the house. She says that the triplets take 130 naps or so every week.
The Big Sister
It is a good thing that Indiana did not show any jealousy since her little brothers arrived. As a matter of fact, it was love at first sight for this little girl! At the age of six, she is doing everything she can to help her mother look after the babies. Even though it can be costly and chaotic, Becki-Jo makes sure to give the kids all the attention she can give them. Every single one of them happens to be a blessing, after all.
Famous On Instagram
You should not be surprised when you run into this story over and over again online. Becki-Jo has more than 64,000 followers on Instagram who love to see the babies grow up. It is a good thing that she is embracing the attention instead of avoiding it. She uses Instagram stories to hold “ask me a question” events, give out parenting advice, and showing what a day in the house looks like. This hard-working mom seems more than glad to answer all of the questions that people send her.
Not The Only One
Even though it looks like there are fewer triplet births now, there were four pairs of identical triplets in 2015. This means that while Becki-Jo is going through something unique, she is not the only person doing so. She can always reach out to the other families and parents for help. The Daily Mail ran a story about how Karen Gilbert, one of the mothers, used different colors on the toenails of her triplets to distinguish among them. Kerry Lyons also has three sons and wrote about what it is like to raise identical triplets. Becki-Jo has now joined their ranks by providing people her advice on her Instagram page.
Birthdays Are Chaotic
There is no doubt that birthday parties are very unique in this household. After all, three of the four kids get to celebrate on the same day! Rohan, Rocco, and Roman shared a cake, balloons, presents, and party celebrations. It is a good thing that Indiana is there to help with the gifts and decorations. The entire family works together to ensure that the triplets would have a heartfelt birthday even though they get to share a single cake. In the end, this works for everyone involved!
It Is A Fulfilling Job
The triplets are living a regular life. They get report cards, fight among each other, and visit sandy beaches. Rocco, Roman, and Rohan are living the lives that many young boys can only dream of. It is also a privilege for Becki-Jo to witness all of their milestones. Of course, she still has a couple of parenting fears like the kids walking through the main road on their own. With the end of their health scares, however, the only thing that remains would be the natural joys and fears that every parent has.
Two Years Later
It has only been two years ever since Becki-Jo found out that she was carrying triplets. This mother says that strangers continue to stop her on the street to talk about how similar the boys look. Everyone always seems shocked when she informs them that they are all identical! Do not fear because the future seems bright for the little boys. We are sure that they will continue to fascinate people and inspire all of us. We cannot wait to see how they are going to turn out in the future!
