Calling a handyman every time something goes wrong in your home can get quite pricey; it’s worthwhile to learn how to tackle basic fixes on your own. Check out our list of repairs every homeowner should master!
Find Out How To…
- Turn Off A Smoke Detector: Smoke detectors often have battery backup- this is what you need to locate when you need to turn off your smoke detector. If you’re sure it was a false alarm, disconnect each battery.
- Fix A Running Toilet: A toilet that runs non-stop is not only super annoying, it’s also a waste of money. Open the flush valve assembly, that lid on top of the toilet, and reposition things a bit. Sometimes a simple nudge makes all the difference. If your toilet is still running, it may be time to replace a part, or the toilet itself.
- Unclog A Drain: Before grabbing chemicals to unclog a drain, grab a small plunger and drain snake instead. After you get all of the icky stuff out, pour baking soda down the drain to remove smelly leftovers. Follow the baking soda with four cups of boiling water and one cup of vinegar. The chemical reaction will leave your drain fresh and clean!
- Install Weatherstripping: If you feel a draft in your home, it’s time to install weatherstripping to windows and doors. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says homeowners can save nearly 15% on heating and cooling with this quick fix.
- Fill Gaps & Cracks: If you need to seal things in your home like electrical outlets and window frames, caulk can help. This method seals undesirable cracks and gaps.
- Test GFCIs: GFCIs (ground fault circuit interrupters) protect you from electrocution, and they’re usually located where there is running water. GFCIs should be tested once a month- plug a light in and press the GFCI’s test button. The button will click, the light will go off and the reset button will come out; press the reset button and the light should turn on. If this did not happen, the GFCI does not work with your outlet or the outlet isn’t wired correctly. Call an electrician to come and fix it.
